Brain Project Evaluation

20/20 evidence of knowledge

I think I presented my knowledge very well. I wrote facts about false memory that most people don’t know

20/20 evidence of comprehension

I presented my evidence of comprehension by explaining in my own words what I had in my presentation.

20/20 evidence of application

I tried to create a false memory in my friend, and it caused her to become very confused.

18/20 evidence of analysis

I put the different examples of false memory into groups, and gave each group a category, such as false memories caused by dreams and imaginations, repetition of descriptions…etc.

19/20 evidence of synthesis

I tried to set up my own steps of creating a false memory within someone by using the details I gathered.

19/20 evidence of evaluation

In my activity, I decided to have a debate about whether therapists should do false memory recovery or not, since false memory recovery could go horribly wrong. I personally think that I would be willing to risk this, but if the therapist is not experienced, then he could create a false memory instead of recovering a memory.
Evaluation of Activity

Choose a presentation and activity that you feel satisfied the entire critical thinking range, comment with specifics why you think this presentation was effective.

I thought Daniel’s presentation about Lucid Dreaming was very interesting. His activity was a test on what we understood or did not understand, and it made us pay attention to him and take notes.

Choose a presentation and activity that you feel satisfied very little of the critical thinking range, comment with specifics why you think this was ineffective, and make suggestions for improvement.

I thought Jonathan’s presentation wasn’t very effective because he didn’t speak in a very loud voice, the topic wasn’t very interesting, and he basically read out what was on his slide.

How has learning about Bloom’s Taxonomy helped you to be a better student?

It has made me a better student by teaching me how to think on a large scale, to be more creative with my own ideas.

At what age or grade level should students be exposed to critical thinking?

I think kids should be exposed to critical thinking by grade 7, or 12 years old. They already know how to read very well by then, and they’ll start projects with more critical thinking, so I suggest they learn the bloom taxonomy then.

Since beginning this project have you been more aware of your own thinking (metacognition)?

I suppose…but I think as I normally would. If something busts into my head, then it’s usually on the lower levels of critical thinking, but sometimes, it could be on the upper 3 levels. Since learning about the Bloom taxonomy, I think the instant thought that bursts into my head has risen to the upper few levels more often.

Lesson 18: Win-Win Thinking

Extentions

Read the following situations and decide who wins and who loses.
1. Kevin and Terry are suspended for fighting in class.

Kevin: lose Terry: lose

2. Patti wants to take the car to pick up her friends for a game. Patti's mom needs the car to pick up groceries and the repaired TV set. Patti ends up taking the car.

Patti: win Patti's mom: lose

3. Brad wants to go watch a movie with Jill. Jill wants to hang out with Brad but wants to go for dinner. They decide to rent a movie and get take-out.

Brad: win Jill: win
4. Sylvesta, a junior, just won the Basketball MVP award for the year. Mikey, a senior, is ripped because he thought he was a shoo-in for the award. The next day Mikey starts a false rumor about Sylvesta's training methods.
Mikey: lose Sylvesta: lose

5. Jeremy sees Sonny is close to putting the final touches on his rebuilt carburetor in shop class. A minute later, Jeremy finds himself "accidentally pushed" into Sonny's work station. After apologizing and helping Sonny pick up the pieces, Jeremy goes back to his near-finished project.

Jeremy: win Sonny: lose

Family Reflections
Choose one relationship in your immediate (sister, mother, etc..) or extended (uncle, cousin, etc..) family and identify the attitude of interaction under which you operate.
I'll choose my mother. We argue with each other a lot, but she usually is the one who gets me to do stuff because I feel guilty when I win the arguement. So basically, when we fight, I win with the words, but end up doing what she wants me to do. Then again, she does a lot of stuff, like cooking, dish-washing, and cleaning. all the stuff that i dont like to do. well, actually, my dad does half of it, but i almost never do chores. im spoiled yay!!!

March of the Penguins (600-word essay)

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

My life is similar to a penguin’s in many ways. In this essay, I shall just compare my life to a young penguin’s. Actually, there isn’t much to talk about that, but somehow, I’ll make this last six hundred words (see how I’m using six hundred instead of 600? It wastes more words ha ha)

A penguin is protected by their mother and father when they are just born. The parents stick them on top of their legs and under their bodies to warm them. I bet my mother took very good care of me when I was a baby. Both penguin parents and human parents care for their children endlessly. There are just no words to describe the motherly love (or actually, it’s more like parental love in the penguins’ case) to their baby.

When the baby grows, up, the parents teach the baby what they know. In the penguins’ case, the parents teach them to catch fish. My parents teach me…well, boring stuff. My dad rants on about circuits and electricity, as well as math, while my mother…actually, she doesn’t lecture me much. She probably noticed I don’t really like Dad’s lectures. Anyways, if she were to lecture me about something, it would be about AutoCAD. Or maybe it would be able machinery. I donno. All my mom says is “try your best on everything and just not think of the result that much. If you got a good mark, great! Celebrate! But if you got a bad mark, don’t sweat over it. Look over your mistakes and do your best next time. There will always be a next time.

I personally thought the penguins were really protective of their young, much more so that other animals. Turtles, for example, abandon their eggs as soon as they laid them. They just leave the little turtles to crawl into the sea. Most of them get snatched away by birds or other animals to eat. Turtles are not good mothers. Penguins, meanwhile, keep their egg warm between their feet and their bodies right after they hatched. Right after the mother laid the eggs, she rolls them over to the father. The father then keeps it warm until the mother comes back from her feeding (I bet she’s hungry). Then, after that, they rotate between who would get the food for the baby (and themselves) and who would take care of the baby. They make a specials sound for their baby penguins to recognize after the little penguin is old enough to wander around themselves. It’s just so sad that some penguins are orphans, and some just get eaten.

Wow four hundred forty-seven words!! Still around a hundred and fifty words to go!! I’m not treating this writing as if it were a real essay am I? It’s more like counting what I’ve written.

Mr. Olson, since I was away in my piano exam on the first part of the movie, I wasn’t able to see it. I only know what was on the bonus part of the movie. Personally, I think the movie from the photographers’ point of view would be better, but then again, I didn’t see the first part, so I wouldn’t know. Watching the bonus part of the movie was good because it showed how much trouble the photographers’ went through photographing penguins. One photographer got frostbite all over his face and hands, and they weren’t able to go film the penguins during the snow storm. I personally think this movie would be suitable for all ages, well at least, for those who can understand it. Certainly babies wouldn’t understand it, but it’ll still be nice for babies to see cute little penguins. :D oh that’s six hundred twenty-four words already. I’ll stop (this is the way Karen ended her essay too :D I’m copying her).

Full Metal Panic

Saturday, January 20, 2007

Plot Synopsis

Sagara Sosuke may look like a high school boy, but he is anything but your average teenager: hardened by years of battle, he is now one of the most skilled (and humorless) operatives of the secretive and powerful paramilitary MITHRIL organization. All this changes, however, when he, along with the lecherous sniper Kurtz Weber and ornery commander Melissa Mao, are assigned to protect pretty young Chidori Kaname, who may be one of the mysterious and sought-after "Whispered". Trained assassins, mech-piloting psychopaths, and booby traps, Sagara can deal with... it's infiltrating a Japanese high school and trying to blend in that's the real challenge. And he will learn that an enraged girl can be the most lethal opponent of all.

Rating: 3.5 / 5

Full Metal Panic takes the well-traveled genres of high school comedy and mecha war drama, mixes them together in the same series, dresses them up in beautiful Gonzo animation, gives them a gritty twist, and wraps them together in a plot hinting at unearthly technology and dark organizations at work.Screenshot from Full Metal Panic

Unfortunately, none of that can hide the fact that in the end Full Metal Panic is just another anime series, never breaking from the cliches of its two genres--the girls still club the hero in a berserk rage at the slightest perception of lechery, even hardened military professionals take time out for a soak in the bath, and you can never, ever use your ultimate weapon until the last possible second. That the plot ends up going nowhere at all (at least until a sequel series) and the two genres feel somewhat uncomfortable next to each other doesn't help, either. It's still well made and a lot of fun, but it isn't half of what it could've been.

Full Metal Panic is definitely at its strongest in the comedy department. The premise--a young soldier who knows nothing but battle forced to try and blend into an average Japanese high school while undercover--has loads of potential, and Sosuke's deadpan determination and brutal practicality contrast perfectly with a lively cast of more standard anime characters to capitalize on it.

Sosuke is hilarious in his awkward attempts to fit in, and the series also takes the time to put his normal classmates into his world on occasion, providing a satisfying role reversal. Sosuke's foil, Chidori, is equally likable for the opposite reasons--a slight sidestep from your standard high school cutie, she's got a vicious temper and isn't afraid to loose it on Sosuke, but also has an earnest sweet side for balance. Chidori is something of a realistic caricature--you know the role, but something rings true about the way her exaggerated personality traits fit together, making her a particularly appealing character.Screenshot from Full Metal Panic

The quality assortment of supplemental characters include Sosuke's far livelier (and more mature, a nice departure from formula) military compatriots who themselves have some amusing interactions with Sosuke's classmates. Those classmates range from Chidori's snapshot-obsessed best friend to a shy military geek (ironically, and amusingly, the only one who Sosuke can manage a conversation with). There are also a variety of more hardened military types who make appearances, and they are generally treated relatively realistically.

Unfortunately, those times where the fun characters in the series overlap with the serious ones are one of its weakest points. The biggest problem is that Chidori behaves more or less like your standard anime schoolgirl even in the face of life-or-death situations, cheapening the drama at the gritty end of the story. Complaining about her lack of decency in the middle of a firefight, for example, showed little of the sense of reality or self-preservation you'd expect from her character. There are a few stronger points (a great reference to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, for example), but for the most part the more humorous characters severely hurt the realism and sense of danger of the more serious parts when they interacted.

That brings me to my second big problem with the series: the drama. On the positive side, the serious sections of the story aren't bad by anime standards--they've got a gritty feel, Sosuke is if nothing else a competent warrior (a welcome change from all those kids uncertain of their worth), and the handheld-style camerawork gives the action a sense of reality. In a couple of places the tragedy of war also crosses briefly from action movie cliche to something a bit more affecting.

On the negative side, it still feels much more like a cheesy action movie than the military drama it seems to be aiming for (particularly in the grittiest story arc, a desert mission in the middle of the series). In contrast with most of the well-developed characters, the caricatured military folks working with Sosuke feel hollow, and after all the talk about planning, strategy, and loyalty, having Sosuke inexplicably save his ultimate weapon until the last possible second is downright silly. The fact that the giant robots, for all their clunky "realistic" design, end up sporting emotion-powered ultimate weapons (and of course a big mane of hair on the evil mech) struck me as rather silly as well.

That Full Metal Panic is a better comedy than a drama perhaps isn't surprising, but what is is how the two are combined. Or rather, how they aren't: The series is composed of roughly equal parts schoolyard comedy and military action, and although the characters overlap, the two parts have absolutely no interaction. One episode will be a rather silly comedy, and the next will try for straightfaced drama and action. The transitions are a bit jarring at best, and leave the series as a whole feeling somewhat scattered.

One more big complaint before I move on: the plot goes absolutely nowhere. It starts right off with hints of powerful clandestine forces at work, mysterious technology and its connection to the Whispered, and a creepy villain (a worthy rival for Sosuke's dry sense of duty thanks to his cheerful contempt and unstable persona) who seems to be working behind the scenes as part of some dark conspiracy.

Sadly, though the villain comes back again and again as a part of various nefarious plots, there is never any explanation of where he keeps getting his extraordinarily nasty toys or who's backing him. There's also no meaningful connection established between the story arcs, no details about what the Whispered are or where the mysterious technology comes from are ever revealed, and there isn't even an end more satisfying than "We got the bad guy. Yet again."Screenshot from Full Metal Panic

All the hints of mystery in the story and the creepy villain felt like an afterthought tacked on to try and cover for the fact that the plot as a whole has absolutely no substance, and doesn't go anywhere.

Fortunately, action fans will probably be more than willing to overlook the generic parts thanks to the gorgeous Gonzo animation. As with most of their work, they give even classic mech-vs-mech action scenes a sense of gritty realism by combining shaky camerawork with a lot of perfectly-executed digital effects (motion blur, glows, and various shockwave distortions). The mech fights aren't quite as down-to-earth as I was hoping (there are a disappointing number of energy blasts and flying jumps), but it still ranks among the best in the genre.

The quality art and animation don't stop at the action scenes, though--all the art is detailed and attractive, and the character animation is top-notch. Chidori in particular is amazingly expressive--her face and body language make her character truly memorable. The fancy action techniques aren't limited to the big fights, either--plenty of creative stuff around school, as well.

Last is the vocal part of the series, which is on par with the visuals--very good (at least in Japanese--I can't speak for the dub). The standout performances are easily Sosuke, for his unwavering deadpan delivery through both drama and comedy, and Chidori, for her endless reserve of energy and mix of ornery and sweet, all while staying believable as a character. The minor characters are just as good, though; Mao and Kurtz both have likable voices with a touch of playful realism that breaks them out of their respective molds, the villain has a smarmy evilness in his voice, tinged with just enough crazy to make him scary, and the collection of minor characters all work well. The music, though generally good (including the catchy if unoriginal opening theme), isn't nearly as memorable, but it does the job.

In all, Full Metal Panic is an enjoyable series. It is not without flaws: it's not nearly as original as it initially appears, the transition between war drama and schoolyard comedy didn't work terribly well, and all the hints at a larger plot go nowhere at all in the end. Still, the collection of likable and creative characters and comedy with an edge are enough to make it memorable and fun. It's definitely worth a shot if the idea sounds at all appealing, and those less picky about details will probably love it.

Related Recommendations

Full Metal Panic has a combination all its own, but random mixes of drama and schoolyard hijinks can be found in Dual (with more emphasis on the harem and mecha) and Jubei-Chan (much sillier, and ninja-ier). Other series with a similar mood include Martian Successor Nadesico (space opera with a similar flavor) and maybe GTO (more down to earth schoolyard dramedy). Finally, for multi-genre series the very different Cowboy Bebop deserves a nod.

had my piano exam today. i finished grade 8!!!! hurray!!! wonder when im gonna take the grade 9 (or 10) exam.. it'll better be before grade 10! 'cause i think im gonna stop taking courses altogether once i get to grade 10. and focus on studying. grades in grade 10, 11, and 12 will count for my future. really count. so im gonna just study. i'll promise myself only 1 episode of anime per week. no japanese either. i'll have to give up japanese courses. such a shame. well, i dont think my parents wil lallow me to give up chinese. well, if i have too much homework actually, i think they'll agree.
the piano exam was less stressing than i thought. the examiner didnt make any comments at all. she wasj ust sitting there, writing and writing. moer writing. she was soooo skinny too. skinny skinny skinny. and i remembered (this is for karen) her name is heidi epp yusuf. or something like that. i might not have spelled her last name right.

this is yesterday's blog okay?? i wrote one yesterday, but it dissappeared.i donno wat happened to it, but i'll write about what happened yesterday.
we found out that our science test is gonna be on wednesday. ms. hu is just giving us soo less time to studay! im gonna have to study all day on sunday, and do my english homework as well. darn. i still have other homework to do. tmw is the piano exam. for some reason, i dont feel scared. im more scared of my piano teacher than the exam. then again, the piano teacher is nice.
well, i got a really bad mark for my chinese exam, but that's okay. i missed 4 questions...forgot to do them, and all those questions added up to 7 points. if i had gotten those seven points, i wouldve gotton much higher. well hmmm wat else? theres gonna be a math test as well on wednesdsay. urgh urgh urgh. ms hu is pretty nice, but the homework (or studying) she gives us is waaay too much. it's beyond the limit of wat a normal eighth-grader is capable of. gosh. there are sooo many terms to remember and everything. better start studying today.

today...boring. science, english, french homework. nooooo. memorize and memorize. write write write. more memorization. this is driving me nuts!!!! well, theres not much to do for french, but i have to come up with a story with a twisted ending for english. how do i do that? ugh ugh ugh. i've got an okay plot taken care of, but i cant really think of how the problem is going to be solved. i noe wat the answer to the problem is, but i dont noe how im gonna write the process to get to the conclusion. the falling action. actually, i dotn noe how to write the rising action either. gotta think more. ok so mostly, the homework is think think think, write write write, type type type, memorize memorize memorize. thinking is the hardest part. im not at all creative. i dont think i am anyways.
im so happy about my private blog! i can write anything i want in it and not worry about offending ppl. if u want the url, its wendyma321.blogspot.com, but u wont be able to see it ha! i limited it to myself and myself only. unless u noe my password (and i made sure that nobody could guess it) u wont get in. to bad :P

uhhhhh yea... i just had my piano lesson. shoulder hurts*.... oww. but that was the best piano lesson since the start of august. i wasnt sweating liike hell. i wasnt nervous. n, best of all, i only made 2 mistakes in the whole 45 minutes!!!! oh yah, i rock!!!! happy.
hmmm...i went to chinese school today...french school. quite boring. except my chinese exam coming back. it was worse. :'( now im crying. cause i never got this kind of mark in chinese school. thats probably because i didnt bother reading 2 important questions 'cause my friend was disturbing me about goign to tinseltown. should've copied her. she only got one mark off in the comprehension questions. i didnt even read the paragraph. as a result, i got 7 percent off there. ahhh well. the other parts were okay. writing 300 words about why being lazy is not good without a dictionary wasnt that bad. well....it was bad, but nto as bad as i thought it would be. at least i survived!! and dat's wat matters.

Lesson 16: Roles and Goals

Note to Mr. Olson: I cannot do the online test. it's all screwed up. Whenever I click on lesson 16, the test appears, but immediately shrinks back. I kept clicking on it...and it kept shrinking back.
Extentions:
Roles:

Daughter: I’ll try to do more chores for them and try to solve an argument effectively with them.
Student: I’ll try not the procrastinate and do my best on every assignment and test.
Piano player: I’ll practice 2 hours everyday until the grade 8 exam (next Friday), and after that, I’ll try to practice 1 hour per day.
Violin player: I’ll try to practice 20 minutes everyday though I am not likely to.
Friend: I’ll find more topic to talk about with friends
Family Reflections:
Have every family member choose one role that relates to your family (e.g.., son, sister, father); set a goal that will have a positive impact in that relationship.
My mom can set a goal not to get angry at my dad for a week. I can set a goal not to hog the computer so much. My dad can set a goal to keep his stuff off the living room.

oooh the movie that we watched on thursday...was so lame that it was funny. i mean, the people were soo dorky (like baby dorky lol) and they were soo stupid that it was funny. the people were wearing clothes from the 1970's, but it was produced in 2005. and the main character, napolean dynamite, was wearing dorky glasses like the ones that superman wears. everything was dorky. some things were embarrassing too. and that was also wat makes it funny.
hmmm we didnt really play that much snow today. yup.. but we did yesterday. rolling down the hills were the best!!! soo great...
ummm darn wat to say? not much homework, but im gonna study science since there are sooo many things to memorize. i think in this unit, we're gonna cover wat happens in our most important systems. well, so far, we've gone over the respertory system and the circulatory system...the digestive system and part of the endocrine system. talking about female and male reporductive systems were awkard, we were giggling a lot, but well...that's it. yup.
we're playing a song by mozart in strings!! eine kleine naqmusique (is that how to spell it?) well, the title is german.. but im sure you've heard it before. the version isnt adapted either. its wat mozart wrote in a washroom in vienna.
karen and i joked that the poop came out right on rhythm. do u understand me? w/e if u dont understand me, i dont care. anyways...it was my idea, and her rhythm or watever she created...
