Evolutionary Fitness - the ability to survive and reproduce (pass on genes)
Adaptation - genetic traits / characteristics that increase fitness
Species - a group of organisms that can sucessfully interbreed and produce fertile offspring

The Wallace and Darwin Theory of Evolution
1) Populations increase at an exponential rate
2) In nature, population remain constant
3) There is always a struggle of existence
4) There is always variation within a species
5) Some traits are more favourable than others
6) Those traits survive, reproduce, and pass on genes

Egyptian Creation Myth

In the very beginning, there was only chaos, a churning, bubbling water that can burn through your throat in an instant called Nun. And it was out of Nun that everything began. Out of chaos the sun god Ra rose, as he cracked the egg that appeared on the surface of the water. He created a place to stand on, and laid a foundation of Egypt.
Because he wanted to reproduce and have a multitude of living creatures, he formed a physical union with his own fist. He masturbated with his own hand (eww how weird is that?), and ejaculated the seed into his own mouth. Whoosh! The air god Shu was exhaled out of his strangely wide mouth, and Tefnut the goddess of moisture, his wife, was spat out gently.
Ra danced around with joy, carefree and lighthearted. He soon became so happy that he sobbed and sobbed in joy, and out of these tears came us, the human beings whose purpose is to entertain him. But men played about, sticking their tongues out at the gods and flailing about o much that Ra and a council of gods decided that they should be ANNIHILATED.
In order for men to be ANNIHILATED, Ra created Sekhmet to do the ANNIHILATION. She was very capable and ANNIHILATED all but a few humans, when Ra felt sorry for those poor humans, changed his mind, and tricked her into stopping.
Afterwards, Shu and Tefnut gave birth to the Earth god Ged and the Sky god Nut. They fell in love, and married, against Ra’s heated orders. Ra exploded when he heard of their _________ and ordered Shu to separate them. Unfortunately, Nut was already pregnant. Thus, Ra declared that she could not give birth in any month of any year.
Thoth, the god of learning, decided to help them and gambled with the moon for extra sunlight.
“Oh moon, oh moon, please go away so that we could have more sunlight!” he begged.
The result was adding 5 days to the 360-day calendar. On those 5 days, Nut pushed and pushed to give birth to Osiris, Seth, Isis, and Nephthys (quadruplets) successfully.
Osiris became the symbol of good, Seth became the symbol of evil, and Isis and Nephtys became their wives. Osiris and Isis had a son named Horus, who later defeated Seth in a great battle and became king of the earth, or the Pharaoh in other words.

Original vs. Alternated Flight Investigation

Overview:
We wanted to test the difference between the original airplane (from the airplane kit) that we built, and an altered version. In the altered version, we took away the landing gear that got in the way when the plane landed and we made the latter glider stiff instead of the original floppy glider.

Results:

Time of Original vs. Variation

Distance of Original vs. Variation

From this, I concluded that the taking away of the landing gear didn’t affect the distance of flight very much. The landing gear actually helped the plane stop on the ground. When we took the landing gear away, we thought that the plane would glid on the grass more, thus increasing the distance.

Photos:

Original: the pink and blue plane
Altered: the orange plane

How did Galileo make so many enemies?
He declared heavenly bodies were imperfect and changing.
How did they get their revenge?
They commenced the Catholic Church to forbid Galileo from defending his ideas by condemning the teachings of Copernicus
Why did Galileo give in to the Inquisition?

A Knight's Tale Anarchisms: Clothing

Thursday, April 19, 2007

in "A Knight's Tale", Joycelyn was wearing modern dresses made of silk/linen. An example of a real renaissance dress would look like this:

There would normally be a iron corset under their dress and have lace all over.

Lesson 30: Personal Renewal

1) Read the following story and respond on the lines below how this story can be related to keeping ourselves fit in all areas of life.

You are walking through the woods one day and come upon a lumberjack who's furiously working at cutting fallen trees into logs. You notice that he's having a very difficult time of it. It seems to you that the chain on his chainsaw has become so dull that the saw barely cuts at all.
You ask him why he doesn't sharpen his chain. He replies, "I've got to get these logs cut. I can't take the time to sharpen my saw."The man didn't realize that if he'd just taken a few minutes to sharpen his tool, cutting through the tree trunks would have required much less of his time and energy.

Physical: hes forcing himself to cut the wood even though it's not possible
Mental: he thinks that if he takes the time to sharpen his saw, then he wouldn't have enough time to cut down the trees
Spiritual: he keeps encouraging himself to finish cutting
Social/Emotional: he's frustrated

Family Reflections

What does your family do to renew and refresh the health of your relationships? Plan an outing or a family fun night.
My family likes to do things together such as swimming, skating, and going on an outing trip.

oooooh no i think i messed up my presentation at the regional fairs. the first person went back home sick. i gave the second judge an overview instead of a detailed version. then i gave the third judge a really detailed version but he kept on asking questions that i cant answer. ii reaaly messed it up.

a guy that sat right next to me called steven got sooo many judges. i mean, its like 5 judges crowd around him at once, listening to wat hes talking about. *so envious*
joy kept on saying "shorty shorty shorty" to me (well, his real name, not shorty), and i kept on saying "snob snob snob" back at her (real name also). nolan was standing there, saying "wudda". hahahaha. but its still really embarrasing....i took some pictures!

UH HUH OH YEAH I DID IT I DID IT...blah blah
I FINISHED MY SCIENCE CHEAT SHEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so happy. and i crammed my writing in it too. i even practiced my science fair presentation. i think i'll better practice more, but i think i will be able to remember what i said last time.
sooo things i have left to do: chinese exam--MEMORIZE!! synthesizing and evaluating is not something u need to do on a chinese exam since the teacher gives out the answers and all we have to do is memorize. actually, memorizing chinese is hard. for me that is. well, memorizing chinese is easy for my parents but memorizing english is not.
anothing thing left to do--PLAY PIANO. im so dead for piano. my teacher's been away for 3 weeks and i still havent finished playing the scales. i still have to polish up my A major (haha so easy but still polishing it up), and E major (easy again haha). and the study from Czarney (is that how to spell his name?) Study book 299 (well, im not sure about the number, but it was 2 hundred something). and that repertoire by tchaikovsky.... i really like the repertoire (called June Bride--Barcarolle), and i played it at least 100 times. actually, maybe not, but i play it quite fluently already.
another thing to do: Japanese!! memorize lesson and Katakana. I slacked off with memorizing Katakana and as a result, i have to memorize 15 characters. actually, its not that bad, but i need to noe them without thinking for 2 seconds or more.
hhmm what shall i wear the the science fair?? im gonna wear a dress on saturday cuz its the awards ceremony, but tmw is the judging. ahhh i donno!!!! i'll think about it tmw morning.
oooh no theres the english in-class essay tmw. i dont wanna do it. i suck at english now. if i want an A, i'll really better do well on this essay. well, im 2.5 percent from an A right now, but theres still 3 months left of term 3. oh wow i cant believe its gonna be summer in 3 months. how quickly grade 8 went by!! actually, grade 7 went by faster, but still! im another year older..another year wiser!! (im thinking of the theme for "All Grown Up")
oh this long blog is to compensate for the "not the time to do this" blog i wrote yesterday. i really was so busy yesterday, u have no idea.

ooooooohh im bored now. i finished science..but i still have to memorize it all. ah well, too lazy.
i finally succeeded in burning lee jun ki movies and dramas onto DVDs, tho, for My Girl, its all messed up. well, its the file's fault, not the burning's fault, cuz the moves were perfectly alright.
my mom and i read "huan zhu ge ge" together tonight. its funny, i really wish the drama was uploaded onto youtube or something. im gonna relax tmw tho, cuz my parents wont be home. now, here are the things that i need to finish during the week:
1) memorize Science (for the science test on chapters 7 and 8)
2) memorize Chinese (for the test the week after next week)
3) play violin (for the test on Symphony in E Minor on tuesday)
4) play piano, especially the studeis (my piano teacher is coming back this week. noooo)
5) do more math everyday (cuz i think i need to stay ahead)

ooh and today, my parents looked at this car called honda fit. i really want it!! they're gonna get the luxury version, i think. i'll prefer the sport version (but i really dont noe the difference), but luxury is really quite something. u can fold down the back seats so that it'll all be empty in the back!! ooh i forgot to tell u, its a hatchback!! and they're gonna get a 2007 model too!! actually, they haven't decided, but i think they are. if they're not, i'll be sad (but i wont show it, cuz its their money they're using).

The Ways Middle Years 8 is Interconnected

Lesson 28: Synergy in Action (Part 1)

Extentions

1) Work out a "want" list with someone else for an agreement that you're trying to reach with someone. Then, make a list of possible "third alternative" solutions that would be good for both parties.
Issue:

Their "want" list
the car has to be blue
has to be Ford
has to have a CD-player
has to be 2002 or newer

My "want" list
the car has to be silver
has to be Toyota
has to have air conditioning
has to be 2004 or newer

Their "don't want" list
1. They don’t want a van
2. They don’t want a Toyota

My "don't want" list
I don’t want a van
I don’t want a ford

Third alternatives
The car could be black or red
It could be Honda
I could have both air conditioning and a CD-player
It could be 2003 and newer
It could be a normal small car

Family Reflections
Are there any unresolved issues in your home that could use some synergy? Walk through the steps to synergy or see if you can come to a solution that makes everyone happy.

The issue is listed above. My parents had a car crash and are now debating about what kind of car to get next. I don't mind a Ford, but I would personally rather a Honda or a Toyota.

Lesson 27: Synergy Action Plans

Extentions:

CRITICIZING

This car does not play CDs.

COMPLAINING

This car does not have air conditioning.

COMPARING

That car has both air conditioning and the ability to play CDs.

COMPETING

That car is more of my preference than this car.

Family Refections

Choose a recent decision you and your family made that had everyone's input. Did you synergize or compromise?

We mostly compromised. The car my mom wanted to buy was a Ford Focus, but my dad wanted to get a Toyota Camry. All I wanted was a car with good air-conditioning and audio equipment. My dad and my mom settled for whatever car seems more durable when they buy it.

ooh i found something that the snob doesnt noe that i noe! japanese!! i bet he doesnt noe japanese other than konichiwa, sayonara, and arigato [gozaimasu]. or maybe he noes ohayo [gozaimasu] , oyasumi [nasai], and shitsurei [shimasu] as well...those are quite common. do u noe them?? oh do u noe why i put part of the word in brackets?? if u dont, i bet the snob doesnt. well anyways, why am i trying to find something im better at than the snob??? i dont even like him. its _______ who should be doing this.

The Knight's Tale Mistakes

Clothing

Jocelyn wore clothing with modern style and material. Women’s clothes in Paris during the middle ages were usually ankle-length, with wide sleeves to the elbow, and were slipped on over the head. There were wide bands of bright colours edging the sleeves, hem, and collar line. There may also be woven bands of wool sewn on, or large areas with lots of embroidery.
Jocelyn wore dresses that were more like evening gowns that snugly fit her bodyline. They looked like they were made of silk, which was hard to get during the middle ages.

ooh daaarn i forgot shorty's birthday was last thursday...march 30th. arrgh. w/e. HE TURNED FOURTEEN!! HURRAY!!! i dont suppose he knew i remembered his birthday. hehe
my parents are now looking at new cars since ICBC reported "total loss" in our car crash. noooo. hmm what to say?
im not having as much fun as last year. there was camp last year, those water fights, and my sleepover. that was soo fun. particularly camp. i remember taking amy's teddy bear and saying "watcha doing" to the ppl going into the washroom (our window faced the washrooms). people would glare at us like we were mental or just ignore us altogether. i think some people in my cabin were uncomfortable with it, but i found it particularly amusing.
well, this year, the most fun i had was going to other ppl's houses to do group work, but instead of doing work, goofing off. that was fun too..
well, its 10:19.

Note

Note to self: Michael Shao watches perverted Korean dramas as punishment from his mom

Lesson 26: Synergize

HANDOUT

1) Write down an important issue that you, your community, your school, or your family is facing right now. Maybe it's bullying at school, a dress code, or a community issue.

Issue/problem:

My family is facing the issue of speaking English properly.

Organize a group of four or five people to discuss the issue you chose. Individually, think of ways to improve or change the problem.

1. Fill in the thought bubbles below with the different solutions each of you come up with.

I can speak English with them

They can watch English TV shows

They can go out more and talk to different people in English

They can go to a community centre and practice their English with random people

2. Use your imagination to brainstorm new ideas.

They can speak English to each other.

3. Together decide which solution will make the biggest difference. Write your group's idea in the solution box

Me speaking English to them on a daily basis makes the biggest difference.

Family Refelctions

Is there anyone in your extended family that you could get along with better? What can you do to start making things better between the two of you?

I can talk more with my grandmothers. I don't usually talk to my grandmother on my father's side, and I'll like to talk to her more often. One problem is, I'll have to be more fluent in Mandarin. I suppose I can phone her and practice my mandarin with her.

but they did have a car crash...they bumped into, guess wat, A POLE. so there was no opposite party to accuse of crashing into us. i mean, i suppose we can sue the pole for popping out of nowhere, but imagine how hard the judges will laugh. anyways, the car stopped moving after the crash and we're gonna have to buy a new car now. uurgh. we just bought this car 3 months ago.
karen, joy, michelle, and i did some english yesterday at michelle's hosue. u can NOT believe how much clothes michelle has!! they are so pretty too...
we did a bit of english, but mostly got distracted by other topics. we stayed until midnight and went back. i wanted to sleepover tho.
