For Further Thought
1. Analyzing.

The Hindus believed that the cow was a sacred animal while Muslims believed that it was food. Hindus believed that music was important, while Muslims believed that it was an offense of god.
b. In what ways was there a peaceful blending of the two cultures?
Urdu came to be (it’s a combination of Persian and Hindi written in Arabic script), Purdah, the practice of secluding women, was adopted, and Muslim mosques were often designed and built by Hindu architects. Hindu artists also painted works that illustrated Persian stories.
2. Applying Information
a. How did Chinese and Japanese attitudes toward foreigners change in the 1500s and 1600s?
They rejected the foreigners to trade in only one city of the country. The Japanese restricted them to the port of Nagasaki while the Chinese restricted them the Macao, and later, Canton.
b. Why do you think their views of foreigners changed?
The Japanese shoguns didn’t like the way that Japanese Christians were pledging obedience to some far-away pope, and they later feared that the Europeans were going to conquer Japan, so they limited their trade with foreign countries.
The Chinese probably thought they had enough to go on without any contact with foreign countries. They probably thought that they were superior to all other countries and didn’t need to be influenced by their cultures.
3. Analyzing a Quotation
A Japanese saying states: “The rice that Hideyoshi cooked was eaten by Tokugawa Ieyasu.” Do you think this saying accurately describes what happened in Japan after the late 1500s?
I don’t think this saying accurately describes what happened in Japan because Japan also flourished under Tokugawa Ieyasu. For example, cities like Edo (Tokyo) grew quickly, and there was peace and prosperity under the Tokugawa shoguns.
4. Comparing
a. Describe the structure of Japanese feudal society.
The Emperor held the highest rank in society, but had no political power. The Shogun was the actual ruler who imposed laws, set wages and prices, and controlled taxes.
The Daimyo were landowners that controlled large estates.
Samurai Soldiers pledged obedience to the Shogun and Daimyo
Peasants and Artisans provided food and weapons
Merchants traded these products to gain money, but they had a low social status.
b. How was Japanese feudalism similar to feudalism in Western Europe?
The Daimyo = the lords, samurai soldiers = knights, peasants = serfs, artisans and merchants were basically the same.
c. How was it different?
The emperor of Japan held no political power, but in Europe, the King had most of the power. The merchants were ranked higher than peasants in Europe, the they were below peasants in Japan.
Developing Basic Skills
1. Using visual evidence
Study the painting on page 119. Does the painting express the same feelings about nature as Li P’s poem?
Yes it does.
2. Map Reading
Map on page 122 and maps on pages 197-198
a. What was the extent of the Mongol empire?
i. It covered almost all of Asia except northern Russia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam
b. What countries today are located in the lands once ruled by the Mongols?
i. Afghanistan, Persia, Russia, Korea…etc.
c. Why do you think Genghis Khan divided his empire among his sons and grandsons?
i. Because he wanted to be FAIR. :D :D :D
3. Using Diagrams
Diagram page 127:
a. Who held the highest status in Japanese society?
The Emperor
b. Who had the lowest status
The Merchants
c. Why do you think the daimyo had so much power and influence
They could change laws, governed the taxes… did everything.
d. What does the diagram tell you about the structure of Japanese society?
It is very much like the status of feudal Europe.

Some things I noticed were that cities on the edge, near the ocean, have less range in temperatures, while cities inland have more range in temperatures. Also, cities in the southern hemisphere have completely opposite graphs than the ones in the northern hemisphere, due to the fact that their summer is in December and their winter is in July.

i watched bleak house on PBS station today. it was good. i watched the first part to it last week too. from now on, i shall like to spend my sunday evening watching masterpiece theatre. they're such good movies!! too bad sunday was so short. i would have liked it to be longer, as a weekend should be 2 days long. but now, due to my lessons, it feels like half a day long. on sunday, i get 6 hours of lessons, and in between, i prepare for the next lesson. thats a lot of work u noe, from 9 in the morning to 8 in the evening. its much more tiring than school. the next morning, i do my homework from school. by the time its finished, its 3 in the afternoon. i take the half day weekend back. its a 7-hour weekend. actually, i usually sleep later than 10:00, but i still consider that less than half a day. geez i hope al lthis work pays off. i now have to study on the bus cuz my parents no longer have a car, seeing as they crashed it into a pole. WHEN ARE THEY GONNA GET ANOTHER ONE???? this is driving me crazy. each week, i spend 4 hours 40 minutes on the road to my lessons. if it were not for the fact that my piano teacher comes to my house, i would spend 6 hours on the road. actually, probably 8 hours since she lives in surrey. i should be very sad if i stop japanese class or piano lessons tho. although piano gives me a lot of pressure, i like playing. i like learning japanese too. as for french and chinese, french doesnt give me stress at all. i hardly try. chinese gives me a lot of stress, but i realize how much it will benefit me in later years. it is such a hard language to learn and memorize, but i feel that i must learn it. just yesterday, i met a woman on the bus whose daughter graduated from univeristy and is now paying 300 per 6 courses of chinese lesson with 10 other people, 5 of whom are cocasion. she asked me whether my chinese school has an age limit. i told her i didnt noe. but it turns out my chinese school doesnt.
aww darn i have that socials final exam to study for. and i still didnt finish piling up those notes, tho i have read a lot of parts of the socials textbook that i havent read. now, i think i have a general idea about what the socials textbook is about, but i cant grasp the details of each chapter. gotta read it again and again.
theres a strings concert on tuesday. i think karen noes about it. and theres also the science presentation to worry about. im gonna talk to anne and karen tmw. i shall really like to hear about karen's vacation. i wonder if she saw the premier of pirates of the caribbean. if she was lucky, she might have gotten an autograph. at least, thats what carmen tells me.
wow this is the longest blog ive written in a long time. i guess i feel like writing right now.
ooooh one more thing! my piano teacher told me to play this B-EAU-TI-FUL song called fantasie in d minor by mozart. i absolutely love it. if u want to hear it, go to youtube and type in the title of the song. but then, she also told me to play june barcarolle again. arrgh. i think im getting tired of that song. i'd raather play that waltz by chopin a little longer than play june although its a nice song. actually, i think all the grade 9 repertoires are good. gonna retire for now. bye. je dois me coucher. je suis tres fatique, aujourd'hui c'est un jour long. mes cheveux sont aussi longes! (not that it has anything to do with it)

i have rediscovered my love for detective conan~!!!! and i joined all the detective conan groups on facebook. there are some nice pictures, and the 11th movie is gonna come out soon. there are some good movies that i really want to see coming out this month. Detective Conan Movie 11: Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure (April 21st), Frist Snow (April 23rd), and Pirates of the Caribbean: at World's End (April 25th). oh my they're all released within the same week. there wont be competition tho. detective conan is a japanese animation movie, first snow is a korean drama movie, and pirates of the caribbean...well all of you know wat its about. ...maybe first snow and detective conan would have a bit of competition, cuz first snow is a mix between japanese and korean actors. and lee jun ki (leading male role) is very popular in japan. i think detective conan is also pretty famous in korea.

oh here are the posters for all three movies in releasing date order. :D:D

Detective Conan Movie 11: Jolly Roger in Deep Sea Azure (May 21st, 2007)

Virgin Snow / First Snow (May 23rd, 2007)

Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End (May 25th, 2007)

when i was getting back from japanese class today, an old tour guide lady with her tourists from Australia was talking to my dad and me at the bus stop. When they were almost about to leave, the tour guide lady asked me "what's ur relationship with that man over there? (meaning my dad) Do you work with him? What's your occupation?"
OMG i am not nearly old enough to work. well, actually, i am, but I WONT HAVE AN OCCUPATION UNTIL 10 YEARS LATER. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! stupid tour guide lady!!! i am 13 years old YOU DIMWIT. DAMN YOU F*UCK YOU BITCH. i have never sworn before, but now, i am fuming, and thus, i start swearing. THIS LADY CROSSED MY LINE.
i told her. "no, that is my dad, and i am a student currently in grade eight" in gritted teeth. U MORON! i said in my head. STUPID STUPID BLIND ASSUMING MORON FROM AUSTRALIA. :@ je suis fache. tres fache. ELLE EST LE PLUS STUPID PERSONNE DANS CETTE (world, i forgot it in french, but i'll use japanese as replacement) SEKAI.

Emotional bank account or EBA
Begin with the end in mind
Put first things first
Be proactive

• Watch the sunset tonight or get up early and watch the sunrise.
Sharpen the Saw
• People-watch at your local mall or store and observe what their body language is saying.
Seek first to understand then to be understood
• Brainstorm with your friends and come up with something fun, new, and different to do this weekend, instead of doing the same old thing again and again.
Synergize
• The next time someone close to you succeeds, be genuinely happy for him or her instead of feeling threatened.
Think win-win
• Before heading to bed, write a simple apology note to someone you may have offended recently.
Be proactive
• Identify and write down your goals so that you can work towards them.
Begin with the End in Mind
• Decide to start using your planner to get your time better planned.
Begin with the End in Mind
• Push the pause button before you react to someone who accidentally bumps you in the hall, causing all of your books for the next class to fly in all directions.
Begin with the end in mind
Family Reflections
Review the 7 Habits' with your family. Are there any Habits that seem to be more challeng ing to you than others? How can you work as a team to incorporate all of the Habits into your lives?

I personally think Synergizing is hardest. When a person wants one thing and another person wants another thing, it's hard to combine where they want to go. For example, if I want to go to PNE and my mother wants to go to the Vancouver Museum on the same day, it's hard to find where we want to go. In the end, we just decided to go to PNE that day and go to the Vancouver Museum another day. That is half win-lose and half win-win.

i borrowed social studies notes from amy and typed them out. well, im not done yet. i only borrowed a quarter of her notes and it took me so long to type. if i cant finish typing within the next two days, im gonna get my dad to photocopy them, as well as carmen's notes. carmen's notes are pretty messed up tho. they're not messy, but they're not really organized. i tried looking for across the centuries textbook from the library, but it wont work. ah well, i'll just study from my current socials textbook and amy's and carmen's notes.

i ended up in vivian's and kia's group for science. kia doesnt do anything. me and vivian do all the work. its equivalent to a 2-person group. and kia still gets our mark.
i have a strings test tmw, but im playing with yan and ziran, so im not that worried. tho i still have to memorize it.. they play it really fast, i dont think i can keep up. ah well, im gonna get a violin teacher in the summer.
i wonder wat karen is doing right now. she must be having fun. tho shes not replying to my emails. joy asked me whether i want to go shopping with her on victoria day with sympascho and a group of a whole bunch of ppl. i'll go if karen goes. actually, she said she'll ask shortie to come. i half hope that he'll come, half hope the he wont. i mean, it's gonna be so embarrasing to see him, but if i dont see him, i would be sad.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Notes

Sunday, May 06, 2007

Plausible
There may have been sword fights
There would be pirates around that time
Parents are hunted by the british navy
Some captains/leutenients may have been demoted if they aid a pirate
Some evil government official might use that for his own facinations

Impossible
There can't be people walking around with octopus's heads
A ship can't sink under the ocean and still come back up
The Kraken is not real
People can't have heads of octopuses and walk around under the ocean
There is no compass that points to your heart's desire

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl Notes

Plausible
There were pirates that were chased after by the british navy
jail bars may have been made by half-barrow wrought iron steel
some aztec gold might have been hidden by pirates
there may have been an adventure similar to this story, but without the fantasy
there may be an island in the middle of the ocean with rum buried under

Impossible
the curse of the aztec gold wasnt possible, in my standards
people cant be immortal
skeletons don't walk around themselves
people can't live after a sword cuts them a hundred times
skeletons can't walk on their own accord under the ocean
skeleton hands can't scramble around, looking for its forearm

my mom ended up deleting my piano lesson for me this week. and i arrived at chinese school late, meaning that i missed the dictation. the teacher forgot all about the recitation, and nobody went through the trouble of reminding her.
i forgot all about the umbra during the science peroid last thursday. now i have to do it again. luckily, i think my strings binder is the same size as karen's science binder, so i can just stack my science binder with my strings binder to create the same degrees as i had last time. if that doesnt work, i'll have to start over again. for this science lab, if vivian doesnt agree to be my partner and goes with kia instead, i'll be partnerless and have to do all the work myself. that is not a very encouraging thought.

my norquay friends. i ended up finding a picture of them in facebook. theres a lot of others, but i liked this one the best.

here are some topics that karen, anne, and i were talking about tonight when we were goofing off:
which person's flesh would taste better if we were actually able to taste it
who can look more pregnant
oh thats the only 2 weird topics...
we also got anne addicted to my girl. thats good.
