Section 1: Voyages of Exploration

Locate:
East Indies: where Jamaica is now, in the Caribbean Sea
West Indies: where Indonesia and Malaysia are now: in between Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean
Line of Demarcation: it goes through the Atlantic Ocean and slices Greenland in half
Identify:
Prince Henry the Navigator: a Prince who encouraged the early Portuguese explorations
Bartholomeu Dias: a person who rounded the southern tip of Africa and named it Cape of Storms
Christopher Columbus: a capable sea captain from Genoa who discovered North and South America
Treaty of Tordesillas: The treaty that drew a Line of Demarcation that ran north and south about 1,100 miles
Amerigo Vespucci: an Italian who represented the Medici bank in Spain, undertook several voyages for Spain
Ferdinand Magellan: a captain who led a Spanish sailing expedition that entered the vast Pacific Ocean
Define:
Latitude: lines that showed distance north and south of the equator
Astrolabe: an instrument that measured the positions of stars
Longitude : lines that show the distance east or west of a certain point
List three technical advances that helped make the voyages of exploration possible

Locate:
Goa: in South-West India
Malacca: on top of the East Indies
Spice Islands: East of the East Indies, north of Australia
Macao: under Canton

Identify:
Affonso de Albuquerque: governor of the Portuguese trading posts

What nations competed for trading rights in Asia?
Dutch, Portugal, Netherlands, England, Portugal, France

What attitude did the rulers of China and Japan have toward European traders?
Regarded the European traders as barbarians.
What policy did China and Japan eventually follow toward foreigners?
They eventually expelled all foreigners.
