Mike's Paraphrase
Lyle eventually lost his sight becase he was originally shortsighted to begin with. He worked as a professor of geology at King's College from 1831 to 1832. Although he worked on many theories, he never actually read Hutton's theories. He believed: that the earth was created by a catalysmic event, that all earth's processes were very slow and that it shifted. Many scientists read about his ideas. However, he couldn't answer simple questions like how mountain ranges were formed, how glaciers worked (he forgot about ice ages). He didnt think that plants and animals suffered from instant anhihilation and that these plants and animals existed since the beginning of earth. Geologists grouped rocks together by the time period they came from. There was a lot of discussion about these two time periods. So, to solve this arguement, the geologists added yet another time period between these two.
