1. Locate: Clermont, Edessa, Antioch, Tripoli, Jerusalem, Marseille, Acre
Xlwemonr: south of France, west of Lyon
Edessa: east of the mediterranean sea, right on the edge
Antioch: south-west of Edessa
Tripoli: south of Antioch
Jerusalem: south of Acre
Marseille: south of Lyon
Acre: south of Tripoli
2. Identify: Seljuk Turks, Urband II, Saladin
Seljuk Turks:a warlike people who converted to Islam
Urband II: a pope who provided knights to help fight the Muslim Turks
Saladin: a general who commanded the Muslim armies who was captured Jerusalem
3. Define: crusade, usury, bill of exchange
crusade: a military expedition against enemies of the church
usury: practice of lending money for interest
bill of exchange: an exchange that allows merchants to pay for good in distant cities without actually carrying gold coins
4. What were two results of the Fourth Crusade?
It seriously weakened the Byzantine Empire, and it diverted attention from the holy land.
5. How did wealthy merchants avoid the Church's ban on usury?
They charged money to carry the loan to the borrower rather than charging interest.
6. How did the Crusades affect Jewish communities in Europe?
Christian mobs attacked Jewish communities; fanatical preachers accused Jews of killing Christian children; new laws forbade Jews to own land; guilds forced Jewish artisans out of most trades.
