1. Identify: Holy Roman Empire, Gregory VII, Concordat of Worms, Innocent III
Holy Roman Empire: Germany and northern Italy: this was made the Holy Roman Empire when the pope crowned him Emperor of the Romans.
Gregory VII: a pope who ended the sale of Church offices and banned the practice of lay investiture.
Concordat of Worms: an agreement that Church officials elected bishops and abbotts.
Innocent III: A pope who came close to making the CHurch supreme in both spiritual and worldly affairs.
2. Define: lay investiture
lay infestiture: a ring or a staff which the emperor gave to a new bishop as a symbol of his office
3. What ties did Otto I have with the Church?
He appointed educated clergy as advisors and supported the Church's missionary work.
4.Why did Gregory VII excommunicate Emperor Henry?
He excommunicated the emperor because the emperor refused to obey his order to ban on lay investiture.
5. What actions by Frederick I threatened the pope?
He took control of northern Italy, and the Church, which was located in central Italy, saw this as a threat.
6. Give one example of how Innocent III exercfised authority over secular rulers.
He excommunicated Henry IV.
